Patton was reportedly 'electrified' by the book, and read it again and again until he knew it by heart. Other American officers also took a keen interest in the book, and an abridged edition was published in 1944 by the 'Infantry Journal' under the title Infantry Attacks. Today, 35 years after its initial publication in the United States, the book is mentioned frequently as a magnificent account of imaginative and successful combat leadership. Copies of the wartime English edition are among the most valued works in private collections.
It is, as well, an important treatise on combat leadership and psychology, and contains many valuable lessons for those who would raise and train armies. Prime among these lessons is the reminder that men are the key element in combat; that it is the will, spirit and skill of men, led by competent and courageous officers that win battles; that high morale is developed by the accomplishment of difficult tasks. Sixty-one years after the fact, and forty-two years after writing this book, Erwin Rommel's message is as clear and important today as it was then.

Field Marshal Erwin Rommel exerted an almost hypnotic influence not only over his own troops but also over the Allied soldiers of the Eighth Army in the Second World War. Even when the legend surrounding his invincibility was overturned at El Alamein, the aura surrounding Rommel himself remained unsullied. As a leader of a small unit in the First World War, he proved himse

Most people have heard of Erwin Rommel, at least in passing. But most people probably associate his name with only two events: World War Two tank battles in North Africa, and Rommel’s forced suicide by Hitler because of his ancillary association with Stauffenberg’s attempt to assassinate Hitler. And most people probably have a general sense that Rommel was not so bad a guy, relative to the Nazi regime as a whole (as low a bar as that may be). This book contradicts none of that, but provides a b..more

This book, written by Erwin Rommel, the German commander in North Africa during World War II, is an excellent documentation of Rommel's experiences as a young commander during the World War I.
It's well written, interesting and easy to read. It's interesting to see things through the eyes of the man who would later become one of the most troublesome enemy leaders that the United States would have to deal with during World War II.

The book is a biography of what he did during the great war with commentary for each engagement including what was done right or wrong. He is a great model of leading by example. Interesting personal account of World War I conditions and tactics. Perhaps a bit self-promotional, but also relates episodes when his decisions did not end successfully and includes praise for both subordinates and superiors.

This is an incredibly detailed, well written account of the First World War by one of the finest generals of the 20th Century. The well drawn and numerous sketches make it very easy to gain an understanding of the battles being described and the 'observations' placed at the end of the description of each engagement often highlight just why Rommel was such a successful commander during the Second World War. You've got to hand it to this guy Rommel, he hardly ever lets even a small flash of humanity show. He seems to be interested in absolutely nothing except small-unit infantry operations. This memoir just goes from one operation to another, on the Franch, Rumanian, and Italian fronts. Whatever he did on leave, in garrison, or on rear duty is ignored. The only effort at reflection is a few 'Observations' given after each action, most pretty obvious (example: after losing touch with another unit in..more
Rommel, you magnificent bastard; I read your book!
Actually, it is a pretty good book. He demonstrates the ability to think decisively but with good sense, and after describing each battle or action, he analyzes what went right and wrong for both sides. He obviously wanted to learn and to teach what he'd learned from experience. He was committed to victory, but only at a minimal cost - this was not some callous cannon-fodder-flinging commander. Excellent book on leadership without politics; tactics without doubt; Soldiering without prejudice. A must read for all new leaders, and a great refresher for seasoned veterans. rest assured this is about a German warrior, not a NAZI political machine. Yes, he was a tool in that mechanism, but he prefered the militarism, tactics and strategies of war far more than the political necessities. Rommel was a great tactician and strategist.

In Infantry Attacks, we get a clear look at Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's life before his fame in the Second World War when he was just an ordinary lieutenant in the First World War simply trying to survive. He proves skillful in battle, quickly going up the ranks. He gains many victories through his iconic tactics, and uses them later when he takes control of the Afrika Korps. This is a great way to draw parallels between Rommel in both World Wars, and view a clear progression in skill and char..more

This book is halfway between a First World War memoir and a small unit tactics field manual. To which I emphasise the technical detail to which the author analyses his command of infantry units during his deployments during the Great War, as this forms most of the book's contents. I mention this to say that if you have little interest in or appreciation of this kind of technical consideration then this book will likely leave you unsatisfied. I read half of this years ago, and finally finished today after starting over a few months ago. Rommel recounts the tactical situations he found himself in during the course of the First World War. He didn't get bogged down in static trench warfare, and seems to have escaped the ennui that engulfed the inter-war planning of the French and British armies since his proto-Bewegungskrieg seems to have worked out each time. This book is not a manual of military instructions. It is rather a memoir of Rommel during WWI, where he was a junior officer leading small units into battle. In this memoir Rommel gives detailed information on the battles that he fought in variety of terrains, from trenches to mountains as part of the Wurttemberg Mountain Battalion. A decent book that stays at the tactical level of war. It provides some interesting insight into Rommel, and what he experienced as a young lieutenant, however, I did not see any insight into how his experiences prepared him for war at the operational level. However, his thoughts on leadership of troops in combat remain valid, and to an extent one can see the same elements of knowing to be at the decisive part of the battle in a young Rommel that you can see in his leadership in North Africa two..more

I would’ve liked to of read this book during officer basic course. Particularly with a high-resolution topo map the vignettes would’ve been more compelling and easier to understand. While the book has many drawings, they are not effective in communicating either the terrain nor unit dispositions; both of which are essential to understanding Rommel’s tactics.

This book is far better than I had ever expected. The exploits of Rommel during WWI are nearly too fantastic to believe. The book focuses on a command perspective and will give little towards the human side of war à la “With the Old Breed”. Read this book before company command and then make your men dig and hike.

More of a self-promoting autobiography than a manual of infantry attacks, this book is still worth reading for anyone who wants to learn about WWI, WWII or Rommel. It traces Rommel's experiences in WWI, starting on the western front at the start of the war, then moving to the mountains in southeast Europe fighting against the Romanians, Italians and Russians.
